Which universities across the GCC use the SAT? Country by country, here is what is real.
Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait all have universities that weigh SAT scores directly in admission. Bahrain and Oman are different, their own universities lean far less on the SAT, but that does not make the exam any less useful for students there, it is still the same score that opens doors in the US, the UAE, and SAT-accepting universities in India. Here is the honest picture for each country.
📰 As featured in Khaleej TimesUniversities in Saudi Arabia using SAT scores
Several leading Saudi institutions accept SAT scores alongside the national Qudurat aptitude test, most often to support shortlisting or as an alternative supporting document.
| University | Location | How SAT is used |
|---|---|---|
| King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) | Dhahran | Maintains a dedicated SAT admissions track for applicants, alongside standard national criteria. |
| Prince Sultan University | Riyadh | SAT accepted as a supporting document, used for shortlisting alongside the Qudurat aptitude test. |
| Alfaisal University | Riyadh | SAT listed as an accepted standardized test alongside Qudrat, Tahsili, ACT, IB, and IGCSE, per official admissions criteria. |
| King Saud University | Riyadh | SAT accepted mainly for international and English-track applicants. Commonly cited minimum around 1000 for Saudi students, 1200 for international students. |
Universities in Qatar using SAT scores
Qatar's Education City hosts branch campuses of several US universities, many of which weigh the SAT directly, alongside Qatar's own national university.
| University | Location | How SAT is used |
|---|---|---|
| Georgetown University in Qatar | Doha, Education City | Test-flexible, SAT not required but considered as part of holistic review. Admitted students average around 1480. |
| Qatar University | Doha | Requires proof of math competency through SAT, ACT, or its own QU-Placer test, SAT Math 550+ is the commonly cited benchmark. |
| Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar | Doha, Education City | SAT or ACT requirement depends on chosen major and secondary curriculum. Independent admissions data estimates the admitted range at roughly 1400 to 1550. |
| Hamad Bin Khalifa University | Doha | Accepts SAT scores as part of admissions, sent directly using HBKU's SAT institutional code. |
Universities in Kuwait using SAT scores
Kuwait's American-model universities are the ones most likely to weigh the SAT, either as a requirement for specific programmes or as an alternative to their own placement tests.
| University | Location | How SAT is used |
|---|---|---|
| American University of Kuwait (AUK) | Salmiya | SAT or ACT scores may be required for certain programmes, affiliated with Dartmouth College. |
| American University of the Middle East (AUM) | Egaila | SAT or ACT required for certain programmes, alongside AUM's own English and Math skill assessment tests. |
| American International University Kuwait (AIU) | Kuwait City | Accepts SAT Evidence Based Reading and Writing as proof of English proficiency, and SAT Math as proof of math competency, both optional alongside the university's own placement tests. |
Universities in Bahrain, and the honest picture on SAT
This one is worth being direct about.
Bahrain's own universities currently lean far less on the SAT than the rest of the GCC. The American University of Bahrain admits primarily on GPA, English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo), and a personal interview, its official admissions criteria do not list the SAT at all. The University of Bahrain, the country's largest public university, follows a similar pattern. This does not make SAT prep pointless for a Bahrain-based student, it means the SAT's value there is almost entirely outbound, US university applications, UAE universities like NYU Abu Dhabi and the American University of Sharjah, and SAT-accepting universities in India through routes like IIIT Hyderabad's DASA admission.
Universities in Oman, and the honest picture on SAT
Similar story to Bahrain, worth saying plainly rather than overselling it.
Sultan Qaboos University, Oman's flagship public university, does not use SAT scores in admission. Entry is based primarily on the national General Education Diploma, and the university admits only a small number of non-Omani students through certificate equivalency. As in Bahrain, this means a strong SAT score is not a local admissions requirement in Oman, but it remains the same score that supports US applications, UAE university options, and SAT-accepting universities in India. Brijesh Chowdary, a SATisfactory student from Indian School Al Ghubra in Oman, used exactly this route, a 1540 SAT score that led to an admit at Claremont McKenna College in the United States.

Do any Bahrain or Oman universities accept the SAT?
Not directly, based on current published admissions criteria. Their largest universities admit primarily on national exams, GPA, and English proficiency. The SAT still matters for students in these countries applying to US, UAE, or SAT-accepting Indian universities.
Which GCC country has the most SAT-accepting universities?
The UAE has the widest range currently, followed closely by Qatar and Saudi Arabia, both of which host branch campuses of US universities that weigh the SAT directly.
Is a Qatar Education City university the same as its US main campus for SAT purposes?
Largely yes. Campuses like Georgetown Qatar and Carnegie Mellon Qatar generally follow admissions policies consistent with their home campus, including how they weigh the SAT.
Does one SAT score work across multiple GCC countries and universities?
Yes. It is the same Digital SAT everywhere. One strong score can support applications across GCC universities, US universities, and SAT-accepting universities in India at the same time.
One SAT score. Every GCC country. Every option on the table.
